Sandstone Pavers FAQs

Have questions about Sandstone Pavers? Amber has the answer.

  • How do you clean Sandstone pavers

Sandstone is relatively simple to care for with regular and consistent upkeep. Ensuring you regularly brush the surface of your sandstone to remove any debris, dirt, or leaves is an excellent first step in maintaining any natural stone in the long term. Ensuring any plant life and weeds are removed is also helpful for keeping sandstone pavers in good condition, preventing mould and moss from growing.

Much like other natural stone pavers, it's crucial to use materials suited to sandstone for deeper cleaning. Acidic cleaners, for instance, can stain sandstone and make them discoloured. Using a mixture of hot water and simple soap, cleaning the whole area with a bristled brush is the ideal solution to remove a build-up of dirt. For tough stains or sandstone paving that is long overdue a clean, using a pressure washer on a low PSI occasionally can also help.

  • How do you lay sandstone pavers?

Sandstone pavers are usually laid in uniform brick patterns, though some sandstone may be available in different shapes and styles for narrower herringbone and chevrons or wider squared stepping slabs. To lay sandstone slabs, you'll need to excavate the area to a suitable depth for your particular purpose, between 3-12 inches. From there, a layer of free-draining gravel or similar material is placed and levelled, followed by a layer of sand.

Once the gravel and sand are laid, sandstone paving can be arranged on top in the pattern and style you prefer. At this point, the slabs can be cut to size to fit a specific area, such as around the sides of a curved pool or for a circular courtyard. Once you've decided on your design, more sand is added on top and pressed between the cracks. Sealants can then be applied on top to protect from wear and tear plus weather damage.

  • How do you clean mould off sandstone pavers?

Sandstone can be susceptible to mould, particularly when close to damp greenery or in the shade near a pool area. The porous nature of sandstone makes it easy for mould, algae and fungi to accumulate over time. If you notice mould, mixing a chlorine bleach solution with a single cup of bleach water combined with around 3.5 litres of water is ideal. This combined cleaning product can be sprayed on areas of mould and left to soak for ten minutes before scrubbing.

To prevent the regrowth of mould, an anti-microbial spray used regularly is an ideal solution. Ensuring the sealant on your sandstone is in good condition and replaced as it wears out can prevent mould from permeating into the stone, making cleaning a far easier task. If you're removing mould, it's essential to wear protective clothing such as a mask, goggles and gloves to protect yourself against chemicals and mould spores.

  • How do sandstone pavers compare to other paver materials?

Sandstone is often considered one of the most well-rounded, practical options for pavers. Sandstone is a tough material with tightly packed molecules, particularly in solid sandstone variations, where you cannot see any distinction between layers. Its hard-wearing nature makes it ideal for use outside as long as you maintain the paver sealant every three to five years to prevent fading or discolouration from bad weather.

The variation in colours for sandstone, from vibrant reds to soft beiges and stark greys, makes this material as versatile as it is durable. If you’re looking for pavers that are easy to clean, sandstone is a solid choice. It also helps that they are widely available and have plenty of variations between different slabs, helping to create a more natural and organic
