INSTALLATION

Urban Surface Pavers can be easily laid in the same way as other concrete & stone paving on roadbase/sand with the standard 2 - 3 mm space used in all other paving installations. However given the product is 20mm thick (versus 30mm to 50mm thick for concrete and stone products) & is rectified & very strong/dense, the following points are important to get the best result.

CUTTING

Need to use a good quality continuous blade as the product is very dense (wet saw is ideal but you can still get a good result by using a good blade on a brick saw).

SCREEDING

Because the edges are rectified & the dimensionality of the paver is quite exact, it is important to prepare a well compacted roadbase layer & good level screed. Fine washed River Sand is recommended for the screed (avoid recycled sand products). We also suggest adding dry cement to the sand in a 1:10 ratio mix which will naturally set to give greater stability.

EDGE RESTRAINTS

Edge restraints are critical to holding the paving in place and minimising movement across the surface. Being thinner than other paving products (but stronger!), the following recommendations are made to ensure edge restraints effectively hold the paving system in place.

SAND & CEMENT MIX

If using a sand & cement mix (as opposed to timber or aluminium/plastic edging etc) the haunch must be strong (say 3:1 Sand/Cement Ratio) and cover the depth of the product (with a small margin - no more than 5mm - to allow for water run-off).

ALUMINIUM EDGING

Using an aluminium edge restraint is another option for a discreet, effective way of containing the porcelain paved area. These are available in 2 or 3 lineal metre lengths & various heights (the 40mm high version will work with the 20mm porcelain paver where the sand bed is compacted to 35mm).

FILLING JOINTS

Finally, we recommend using Amber "Interlock" paving sand for joints. Once wet, this will help lock in the system, minimise joint erosion from wind/rain & growth of weeds etc. It is important to keep topping up the Interlock paving sand to ensure joints are not exposed.

The above are recommendations only. Conditions will vary from site to site and therefore the contractor should decide whether these applications are adequate or further adjustments need to be made.
